Optimising Report Creation through a Design System and Report Toolkit

Optimising Report Creation through a Design System and Report Toolkit

Challenge

Particularly in the banking sector, many organisations rely heavily on analytical reporting, where report creation can become a time-consuming and inconsistent process.

Different teams produce reports with varying structures and visual styles, making standardisation difficult and increasing the time required to prepare executive presentations or analytical dashboards.

In addition, analysts and developers often need to recreate layouts, charts and visual components for each new report. This process results in lengthy report development times, a lack of visual consistency across teams, additional iterations to align with branding guidelines, and reduced productivity for technical teams.

In an environment where speed and consistency of information are critical, adopting a more structured approach to report creation becomes essential.

Solution

Solution

To address these challenges, BI4ALL implemented an approach based on a Design System and a Report Toolkit, designed to accelerate and standardise the report creation process. The Design System provides a set of visual components and best practices aligned with the organisation’s branding.

Complementing this, the Report Toolkit offers templates and pre-defined report page structures, enabling teams to create dashboards and analytical reports quickly and consistently.

The solution was implemented using Power BI, allowing templates to be integrated directly into the development process of dashboards and analytical reports.

Benefits

The adoption of this approach delivered significant improvements in the efficiency and consistency of reporting across the organisation. By aligning reports in advance with branding guidelines and a defined set of best practices, it was possible to reduce the effort associated with developing and reviewing dashboards, ensuring greater visual and structural coherence across different reports.

Additionally, automating the selection of layouts and visual components contributed to a substantial increase in the productivity of development teams. Overall, this approach resulted in an approximate 40% reduction in workload and a 35% improvement in developer productivity, accelerating the report development process and enhancing the quality of data communication within the organisation.

Statistics

50% faster creation of new report pages, thanks to the use of reusable templates and components
80% increase in visual and layout consistency across reports produced by different teams

Practical Applications

  1. Creation of executive dashboards in corporate environments
  2. Development of standardised analytical reports
  3. Business Intelligence projects involving multiple teams
  4. Implementation of corporate reporting frameworks
  5. Scaling data visualisation solutions

Example

Example

Consider a bank that produces analytical reports for various business areas, including risk, operations and executive management.

Before implementing this approach, each team developed its reports independently, resulting in significant differences in layout and visual style.

With the introduction of a Design System and Report Toolkit, analysts began using standardised templates in Power BI to develop new reports.

Now, whenever a new report page is created, visual elements automatically follow the defined guidelines, ensuring consistency and significantly reducing development time.

As a result, the organisation was able to accelerate the report creation process, improve the visual quality of dashboards, and enable teams to focus more on data analysis and generating strategic insights.

Native Writeback in Power BI with Translytical Task Flows

O Power BI tem vindo a distinguir-se como uma plataforma particularmente eficaz para modelação semântica, análise e visualização de dados, mas menos orientada para cenários de ação operacional no próprio contexto do relatório.
