The Company
Mudum – Companhia de Seguros, S. A. (Mudum Seguros) was established on 1 October 1996 with the main mission of serving the private individual market segment in non-life insurance.
Products are sold by partners in a strategy to maximise synergies and offer a complete service to customers.
The activity of Mudum Seguros is based on five core values: Customer orientation, striving for excellence, individual initiative, honesty, integrity and team spirit.
With these values, Mudum Seguros seeks to make a decisive contribution to people’s trust and security, seeking to distinguish itself by the simplicity and ease of the choices presented, by the trust built through the clarity of the language used, the quality of service and the promptness in dealing with customer needs.
Mudum Seguros is part of the French financial group Crédit Agricole, and its sole shareholder is Crédit Agricole Assurances. The latter has always been part of the company’s shareholder structure and, in 2020, became its sole shareholder.
The Crédit Agricole Group is one of the main partners of the French economy and one of the largest European banking groups. It is the leading retail bank, the largest asset manager, the first “bancassurrer” on the European continent and the 10th largest bank in the world. It is present in 47 countries, has 147,000 employees and manages 53 million customers globally.
Crédit Agricole Assurances is the leading insurance group in France and the leading insurance-banking player in Europe. With solutions to meet all its customers’ protection and savings needs, whether private or corporate, it is currently present in 8 countries and has 5,100 employees.
The Challenge
For more than 20 years, Mudum Seguros has leveraged the use of the data at its disposal to operate its business, seeking to be innovative in how it does so according to its clients and the services it provides.
“For instance, in the adjustment of insurance premium rates according to the customer profile, the use of data to support the business has always been part of our way of operating,” begins by explaining Mara Ferreira, CDO & CIO | Director of the Data, Technology and Transformation Department, at Mudum Seguros.
With the recent shareholder changes in the company, the need arose to structurally review the technology park used and the organisation and teams. “Extending the capacity to use data to improve the services we provide and the way we operate was considered a priority for the company.
In this way, in 2022, we decided to strengthen our focus on the Data area and a dedicated organisational structure was created. A data programme was therefore thought out, defined and initiated”, she adds.
The Solution
Being the Data area a new structure in the company, there was a need to reinforce internal capacity with a partner that could provide resources and specialised knowledge about data across all the programme’s operating pillars.
“We were looking for an entity that had knowledge and experience in the architectures and technological solutions design and implementation, that took advantage of current technological capabilities and knew the challenges inherent to an organisation with mature information systems. It was also crucial to have knowledge of the reality and specificities of the insurance sector (including business, commercial development and legal challenges – such as the requirements of IFRS17 regulations) and to have the ability to adjust the pace and teams to the several projects underway in the company,” specified Mara Ferreira.
Adding that “BI4ALL is a company recognised in the Data Analytics market, and presented itself as a flexible company, capable of understanding Mudum’s challenges and adjusting the teams it puts at our service so that, together, the appropriate solutions for the company could be created.
The work began with reviewing the technological architecture of data support, ensuring that it is modular and that we could implement it in phases and take advantage of ongoing projects.
Given the knowledge demonstrated by the team, we challenged BI4ALL to also participate in initiatives related to the creation of the company’s data catalogue and glossary, with the initial priority being the customer data domain”.
Mudum is currently selecting the data governance technology tool that will support the defined data quality policy, and BI4ALL is supporting the execution of proofs of concept with two different technologies, working together with the Centre of Excellence of the Credit Agricole Assurances group.
The proofs of concept aimed at testing the technology to assess its suitability to the company’s requirements regarding management capabilities, technology integration, data inventory (automatic and manual), usability, function segregation, investment costs, maintenance costs and vendor dependency.
Additionally, BI4ALL is also providing support in the creation of governance, good practices and rules of use of technology to support the exploration of information, namely Power BI.
The use of Power BI in a decentralized manner in the organization has strong advantages from the point of empowering the organization to explore data and share indicators, however, Mudum seeks to answer questions such as: What data to use to improve customer service? What data is useful for management? How do we accelerate the production and quality improvement of the dashboards produced? How do we instil a culture of experimentation in the analysis of information? How do we instil a culture of experimentation in the evaluation of the relevance of the indicators? How do we guarantee the alignment between strategy and operational indicators?
These and other questions were the headlines for creating governance, rules and good practices defined and continuously improving. Knowledge-sharing and experimentation sessions were held for the whole company in a hybrid format.
The Results
- Internal adoption of the use of new work tools to explore data and produce information for reporting. For this, monitoring and properly defining a change management and data culture plan, including recurrent training and follow-up on developments was fundamental. Mara Ferreira states, “BI4ALL also plays a key role in this component, presenting best practice strategies and methodologies on how to implement the Data Program initiatives”.
- Centralised availability, in the short/medium term, of the main KPIs of each area so that they may contribute in an active way to management decision-making regarding the Company’s activity, with the main focus being customer satisfaction and the availability of better offers on the market.
- Creation of data and information management policies that are strategically aligned with the business. This alignment may bring higher benefits in terms of creating new insights into the Company’s business.
- Make the most of the information that will be built by implementing the Business Intelligence (BI) system that combines data from operational systems with analytical tools, aiming to improve the quality of information and the overall improvement of the organisation’s performance. The main objective is to have consolidated information to obtain greater productivity and make decisions based on insights.
